How can I tell if a Moroccan rug is authentic?

An authentic Moroccan rug is handwoven from 100% undyed or plant-dyed wool, has slight irregularities in pattern and edge, and is sourced from a Moroccan cooperative or weaver, not a factory. Machine-made imitations use synthetic fibers, perfectly symmetrical patterns, and lack the natural lanolin smell of raw wool. What is the difference between Beni Ourain, Boujaad, and Azilal rugs?

Beni Ourain rugs are cream-colored with black geometric diamonds and thick pile. Boujaad rugs use warm rose, red, and terracotta tones with dense abstract patterns. Azilal rugs feature bright colored symbols on an ivory background and are known for their artistic freedom. All three are handwoven from natural wool in different regions of the Moroccan Atlas Mountains.

Are Moroccan wool rugs good for high-traffic areas?

Yes. Natural sheep wool is one of the most durable rug materials available. It resists crushing, hides dirt, and can last 50+ years with basic care. Wool also naturally repels liquids, making it well-suited for living rooms, hallways, and dining spaces.

Why are OwnCrafted rugs less expensive than boutique retailers?

We source directly from Berber weaving cooperatives in the Atlas Mountains and ship straight from our Marrakech workshop. There are no importers, no showroom overhead, and no wholesaler markups between the weaver and you.

Shipping and applicable duties/taxes are included for the USA, UK and selected European countries listed in our shipping details. Other available destinations: $45 shipping; local import charges may apply.

30-day returns, including custom sizes

Request a return within 30 days of delivery. Eligible unused rugs can be returned with a prepaid DHL label, provided after approval. For an approved return, the full refund is arranged once the shipping company confirms it has collected your item; you do not need to wait for it to reach our workshop. The refund is expected to reach you within 5–8 calendar days of that confirmation; bank or payment-provider posting times may vary.

Cancel within 24 hours of placing your order. After 24 hours, cancellation is no longer available because production begins.
