Moroccan Rug Size Guide
Rug sizing is where most first-time buyers make expensive mistakes. This guide is the framework professional interior designers use to size rugs correctly the first time.

The Golden Rule
At minimum, the front legs of every major seating piece (sofa, armchairs) should rest on the rug. Undersized rugs make a room look cramped and cheap regardless of how nice the rug is. When in doubt, size up.
Living Room Sizing
By room dimensions:
- Small living room (up to 3×4 m / 10×13 ft): 200×300 cm (6×10 ft) minimum
- Medium living room (3.5×4.5 m / 12×15 ft): 250×350 cm (8×11 ft)
- Large living room (4.5×6 m / 15×20 ft): 300×400 cm (10×13 ft) or larger
- Great room / open plan: Consider two rugs — one under the seating area, one under the dining table
Three placement options:
- All furniture ON the rug (most luxurious): Every sofa and chair sits fully on the rug. Requires the largest size for your room.
- Front legs ON the rug (most popular): Front legs of sofa and chairs on rug, back legs on hardwood. Balanced without maximum size.
- Coffee table + partial furniture (smallest): Only the coffee table and front legs of the sofa touch the rug. Cheapest option but risks looking undersized.
Bedroom Sizing
Three approaches, each valid:
Full-bed placement (most popular)
The rug extends 60-80 cm (24-32 inches) beyond the sides and foot of the bed.
- For a Twin bed: 150×240 cm (5×8 ft) minimum
- For a Full/Double bed: 200×300 cm (6×10 ft) minimum
- For a Queen bed: 250×350 cm (8×11 ft) minimum
- For a King bed: 300×400 cm (10×13 ft) minimum
Foot-of-bed placement
A smaller rug placed only at the foot of the bed, extending 60 cm beyond bed width. Works with any size bed. Typical sizes: 100×180 cm or 120×180 cm.
Two runners on either side of the bed
Practical and budget-friendly. Typical size for each runner: 60×180 cm.
Dining Room Sizing
The rug should extend at least 60 cm (24 inches) beyond every side of the dining table so that chairs remain fully on the rug when pulled out.
- Table seating 4-6 (rectangular, up to 180 cm): 200×300 cm rug minimum
- Table seating 6-8 (up to 220 cm): 250×350 cm rug
- Table seating 8-10 (up to 260 cm): 300×400 cm rug
- Round dining tables: choose a round or square rug at least 90 cm (36 inches) wider than the table's diameter
Hallway Sizing
Runner rugs for hallways should:
- Leave 15-30 cm (6-12 inches) of floor visible at each end of the runner
- Leave at least 15 cm of floor visible on each side of the runner
How to calculate: Measure hallway length, subtract 30-60 cm total. Measure width, subtract 30 cm total.
Example: A 4-meter hallway with 90 cm width → runner should be approximately 340-370 cm long and 60 cm wide.
Kitchen Sizing
Two common configurations:
- Runner in front of counter: Runner length should be slightly shorter than the counter. Width 60-90 cm.
- Small rug in front of sink: 90×150 cm or 60×90 cm.
Entryway Sizing
- Standard entryway: 90×150 cm rug or 60×180 cm runner
- Large entryway or foyer: 150×240 cm rug or larger
Wool rugs work well in entryways because natural lanolin repels shoe moisture and dirt.
Under Sofa / Under Bed Placement Detail
Under sofa (living room):
Front legs of the sofa should rest on the rug. Rug typically extends 30-60 cm in front of and to the sides of the sofa.
Under bed (bedroom, full-bed placement):
The rug should extend past the sides of the bed by 60-80 cm and past the foot of the bed by 60-80 cm. Head of the bed can be off the rug (nightstands often go on hardwood).

- 300×400 cm (approximately 10×13 ft)

Try Before You Commit
Before ordering, tape out the rug's dimensions on your floor with painter's tape. Live with the taped outline for 24-48 hours. Walk around it. Sit on your sofa. Watch how much floor remains visible. This is the single most reliable way to know if a size will feel right in your space.
