Choosing the right rug size is the single biggest thing that makes a room look styled rather than "off." Too small is the most common mistake. Here's a simple, room-by-room guide to getting it right — with the measurements we offer at OwnCrafted.
The golden rule
A rug should feel like it anchors the furniture, not floats between it. As a general rule, leave about 20–40 cm (8–16 in) of floor showing between the edge of the rug and the walls.
Living room
You have two good options:
- Front legs on: the front legs of your sofa and armchairs sit on the rug. This is the easiest and most affordable choice — a 200 × 300 cm rug works for most sofas.
- All legs on: for a more luxurious look, all furniture legs sit on the rug — go for 250 × 350 cm or 300 × 400 cm in larger rooms.
Bedroom
- Under the bed (most popular): a 200 × 300 cm rug under a queen bed, or 250 × 350 cm under a king, leaves a soft border of rug on three sides to step onto.
- Runners at the sides: two runner rugs on either side of the bed are a great budget-friendly alternative.
Dining room
The rug should be big enough that chairs stay on the rug even when pulled out. Add about 60 cm (24 in) on every side of the table. For a table that seats 6, that usually means 200 × 300 cm.
Hallways & kitchens
This is runner territory. A runner rug should leave a little floor showing on each side and each end. Because our runners are made to order, you can request the exact length your space needs.
