We Don't Import Rugs. We Come From Where They're Made.
OwnCrafted was founded in Oued Zem to solve a simple problem: the "Moroccan rugs" sold worldwide are rarely made by Moroccans, and almost never by the Berber women whose grandmothers invented the craft.
We source every rug directly from weaving cooperatives across the Atlas Mountains and the Haouz plains. No importers. No wholesalers. No showrooms taking a cut. The rug you receive is shipped from the same city where it was inspected, wrapped, and paid for — Oued Zem.
What Makes an OwnCrafted Rug Different
Sourced, not resold
Every rug is bought directly from the woman who wove it, or from her cooperative. We visit the villages ourselves. We know the weavers by name. We do not buy from importers, Etsy resellers, or bulk wholesale markets in Oued Zem.
100% natural materials
Undyed sheep wool from Atlas Mountain flocks. Cotton warp threads. Plant and mineral dyes only — madder root for rose, indigo for blue, walnut hull for brown, saffron for yellow. No polyester. No viscose. No chemical treatments. Ever.
Signed by the weaver
Each rug ships with a heritage card bearing the artisan's name, region, and often her photograph. Provenance is not a marketing feature for us — it is proof that the piece is what we say it is.
Fair pay, transparently
OwnCrafted pays weavers 45-65% of the final sale price, depending on the rug's complexity. This is 3 to 5 times what most middleman-driven supply chains pay. We are working toward publishing individual weaver earnings for full transparency.
How We Got Started
OwnCrafted began after we watched a rug leave a cooperative in the Beni Ourain region for $80 and reach a boutique in Los Angeles priced at $3,200. The weaver — a woman named Fatima, in her 60s, with granddaughters who no longer weave — had made the piece over ten weeks. The forty times markup between her loom and the retail floor was not paying for craftsmanship. It was paying for distance.
We started OwnCrafted to compress that distance. Rugs travel from the weaver's loom to our workshop in Oued Zem to your floor in three steps, not seven. The price you pay reflects craftsmanship and fair wages, not middleman markup.
Where We Work
Our sourcing network includes cooperatives in:
- The Middle Atlas Mountains — Beni Ourain and Mrirt weavers
- The High Atlas Mountains — Azilal and Ait Bou Oulli weavers
- The Haouz Plains — Boujaad weavers south of Casablanca
- The Oued Zem medina — leather artisans, brass smiths, and ceramic potters
Every partner cooperative we work with has been vetted for authentic Berber weaving techniques, fair internal pay structures, and use of natural materials only.
What We Ship
Beyond rugs, OwnCrafted offers a curated selection of authentic Moroccan homewares — hand-painted ceramics from Fez, handwoven textiles, brass and copper lighting from Oued Zem workshops, leather poufs from goatskin tanneries, and traditional Berber jewelry crafted by Amazigh silversmiths.
Every product in our catalog follows the same principle as our rugs: sourced directly, made by hand, shipped from Morocco.
