How to Care for a Handwoven Wool Moroccan Rug

A handwoven wool Moroccan rug is built to last for decades — many are passed down for generations. Wool is naturally durable, stain-resistant and easy to live with. Here's how to keep yours looking beautiful.

Vacuuming

Vacuum once a week using suction only — turn off the beater bar (the rotating brush), which can pull at the wool. For a plush pile like a Beni Ourain, a handheld attachment is gentlest.

Is shedding normal?

Yes. New wool rugs shed lightly for the first 4 to 6 weeks — this is completely normal and decreases significantly with regular vacuuming. It's a sign of genuine, natural wool.

Dealing with spills

  • Act fast: blot (don't rub) with a clean, dry cloth to lift the liquid.
  • Then use cold water and a little mild, wool-safe soap. Blot again and let it air dry.
  • Never use hot water, bleach or harsh chemicals — they can damage natural dyes and fibres.

Rotate for even wear

Rotate your rug 180 degrees every six months so foot traffic and sunlight wear it evenly. This is especially important in bright rooms.

Protect the colors

Natural plant dyes are beautiful but do soften over many years of strong, direct sunlight. Keep the rug out of harsh, constant sun where you can — or rotate it so any fading stays even. Note: with natural dyes, this gentle mellowing over decades is part of a rug's character, not a defect.

Deep cleaning

For a thorough clean, use a professional wool rug cleaner every 2 to 3 years. Avoid machine washing, steam cleaning and tumble drying at home.
